I purchased this for a 6" inline fan. I choose to buy the 6" fan instead of the smaller quieter 4" in hopes that an added speed controller would quite the fan, yet leave me with a big fan i could eventually use in a larger space later. This Speed Controller allowed me to do just that. By ear I'd say on the medium range it cut the noise of my fan in half. Exactly what I needed while still moving an adequate amount of air. I do have to mention though, that while this controller does what I mentioned, on my fan at least, when i turn the speed down my fan creates a buzzing electricity sound. Even with that buzz it's still much quieter then when at full speed, but it made me worry a little about what was happening to my fan. I'm not sure why it buzzes, but i can say that the fan is still running fine after three days with no other problems whatsoever. So I'm gonna assume the buzzing sound is normal and harmless. Worst case my fan dies, but i figure that would happen soon after using it and my fan has a 3 year warranty so I"m not concerned. Keep in mind even if the buzzing thing isn't normal, it very well could be because of my fan and not the speed controller.Ok. Hope that helps all you grow guys out there looking for options for your ventilation and odor control setups. This controller would also work perfect for a wood burning stove fan. I might buy a second one for my pellet stove.
